School pictures have a long life. They end up on the fridge, in a grandparent's frame and in the yearbook, and years later they are the photos everyone pulls out to see how much your child has grown.
At a uniform school, everyone in the class is wearing the same thing. That takes the guesswork out of choosing an outfit, but it also means the small details stand out: a collar that won't lie flat, a sleeve that has crept past the wrist, a mark from breakfast.
A little preparation in the days before picture day makes a noticeable difference. Here is how to get the uniform, and your child, ready for the camera.
Most schools hold fall picture day in September or October and send the date home a week or two ahead. Put it on the calendar as soon as it arrives.
Then read the notice carefully. Some schools ask for the full formal uniform on picture day, such as a blazer, tie or cardigan that is optional the rest of the year. Others are happy with the everyday uniform. Knowing which one applies gives you time to find or replace a piece rather than discovering it is missing the night before.
It is also worth noting the retake date, which most schools schedule a few weeks later.
Children grow quickly, and a shirt that fit well in August can look tight by October. Have your child try on the picture day uniform a week ahead and check a few things:
If something has gotten too small, a week is enough time to replace it. Our sizing guide can help you choose the right size the first time.
Wash the shirt or blouse a day or two ahead, then lay out the whole uniform the night before:
Laying everything out also takes the pressure off picture day morning, which tends to be busier than usual.
A few things are easy to miss in person but noticeable in a photo:
Keep hair simple and familiar. If your child needs a haircut, book it about a week before picture day rather than the day before, so it has time to settle.
Clean glasses on the morning of the photo, since smudges show up under studio lights. And rather than asking for a big smile, talk with your child about something that makes them laugh. A relaxed expression tends to come through more naturally than a posed one.
Picture day often falls in the morning, and breakfast is the usual culprit. A few simple steps help:
Sometimes a child is absent, has a rough morning or simply isn't happy with the result. That is what retake day is for. Most schools offer one, and the preparation you have already done carries straight over.
Picture day doesn't need to be stressful. A uniform that fits, a quick press the night before and a calm morning go a long way toward a photo your family will enjoy for years.
